Jean-Pierre Jeunet co-wrote and co-directed the black comedy Delicatessen (1991) and the dystopian sci-fi film The City of lost Children (1995) with collaborator Marc Caro.
Ron Perlman, who had worked with Jeunet previously on City of Lost Children, was cast. Dominique Pinon, who has appeared in every film Jeunet has directed, was also cast.
